  1. JJ was 2-2 against Cross. the blow-out loss in '11, which seems to be all anyone around here remembers, was the 2nd D-1 game of the year for a basically entire new squad (the first game a pretty narrow loss at Tech), played in what was such a foreign setting to any of the new kids and was, without question, the biggest anomaly of JJ's entire tenure. that team still made the conference championship game. do you remember what those were like? despite all that...find me anywhere that anyone said "JJ is our best option at all costs". go ahead...find it. oh? nothing? sort of like what fills that bag you're dragging around? hmm. the conversation around JJ started as a noting of the fact that he'll likely be out of a job the same day UNT starts it's well over-due coaching search. nobody said "hire him!!" or "our savior!!"...only that here is a guy who is familiar with UNT, has already once brought at the very least respectability and conference competitiveness to a program in effing ashes...maybe we should at least consider walking him through the still smoldering pile of shit we made of his work and say, "whatta think of what we did with the place? wanna help us redecorate again?" these are such generic sports guy lines..."strive for better success"..."mediocrity has been our standard"... what the hell does that even mean? you won't find a soul amongst any of even JJ's most fervent supporters who will say he's a perfect coach. I have a well-chronicled history through this basketball forum and other media (when I actually gave a shit about basketball) of being highly critical of a number of his coaching qualities. that said...the "perfect" coach sure as hell isn't coming to a directional school with a 40% winning percentage over the last half-decade. mediocrity would be a be a giant improvement.

  2. The irony is that if it weren't for JJ's success prior to the last half-decade dumpster fire, no one could possibly mount an argument that we should aspire to greater heights than the very coach who made us believe that we deserve nice things in the first place.

  5. In alphabetical order: 1. WR Jaeion Darden; "Darden might have had more attention had he played wide receiver at the high school level. Darden starts at QB for Houston Heights, so it will be interesting to see how he transitions to WR in college. He's a great athlete with a high football IQ."; 2 Tyreke Davis (S/LB) "The heartbeat of one of 5A's best teams, Davis burst into the scene with a breakout junior season that saw him average 6.7 yards a carry as a running back and lead the team with 117 tackles at linebacker. He's likely to bulk up and stick at North Texas, where he is committed."; 3.Cameron Johnson DB-A North Texas commit, Johnson has to work on his technique and footwork in order to make an early impact for the Mean Green. He does a good job of pressing wide outs at the line of scrimmage and often wins when he gambles by jumping routes early."4. Brian Parish (OL) "Parish looks taller than his listed size and possesses obvious length, giving him good frame potential as he continues to physically develop. He's an impressive downfield blocker because of his ability to get off the line of scrimmage and use his athleticism. Parish is great as a blocker in the screen game". 5. Cade Pearson (QB), Pearson gives his receivers a chance with accuracy. He doesn't possess the elite arm strength of P5 recruits, but he is accurate and deliberate. He excels in the quick passing game and has enough arm to stretch a defense when necessary. He's mobile inside the pocket".

  6. First, with an attendance of 39,117, the HOD bowl had the 2nd largest crowd of all 19 early bowls from 12/17 through 4 pm, 12/28 (eclipsed only by a slightly larger turn-out for the Military Bowl in Fort Worth. This again, proved that North Texas can be an attractive and profitable pick for a bowl. Second, the game was a broadcasters dream, with ups and downs and a down to the wire finish. Certainly, it left a better impression than a blow out would have...and third, the desire of the team and the enthusiasm of the North Texas crowd, made a very favorable impression of the program overall. I say "good job"!

  8. Should we open a new forum called "UTSA Football Recruiting" to track their progress? Signing day is a little over 51 weeks away. Let's worry about what we are doing before we start tracking their every move. I heard a good one the other day. It states, "If the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, then water your damn lawn!" Let's work on watering our yard before we starting envying the neighbors.

  9. Ehhhhh with good doctors, rehab regimen, hard work, and focus on the rehab, sure. Let's not dismiss the severity of an ACL injury, and the physical and mental return to the field. While NFL supastars come back in a year, Isadore isn't and he'll be less than a year removed from surgery at the start of next season. We're setting him up for failure if we assume that he'll be ready to compete this spring. If he is, that's amazing, but I would think he'd be eased in to fall comp.

  11. I'm starting to pick out the posters who clearly made up their minds about certain topics (like JJ) long ago, don't bother reading the discussions, and spew the same dated/mis-informed views over and over again. You're a growing militia, and it is unsettling.

  14. Apparently, in order to start a "rivalry", we need some of their classy fans to get trashy and start trolling this board, twitter, etc... ...Probably not gonna happen, so no "rivalry" with them. It's what happens when you've followed a University's athletics program for longer than 5 years. You learn how to carry yourself when supporting your team.

  17. Instead of continuing to dwell on the past in regards to the basketball program and the current state of the program, I'm going to start thinking about the future. I'm sure much speculation will come with who WB will hire. He has a background in basketball and I seem to remember some comments about him being a great hire from the basketball world when he was hired. Not saying any of these coaches would be candidates but below are basketball hires made by WB. Some hires came from outside at times while promoting from within twice as well. Has hired assistants and sitting head coaches. These were hires made with WB as AD. I'm not sure but I don't think Missouri or Memphis hired MBB or WBB coaches during his on the staff there. Wren Baker (Rogers State) 20-11 – stepped down to be full-time AD, now AD at UNT Lloyd Williams (Rogers State MBB) 52-13 – now husband to Amy Williams who is Head WBB Coach at Nebraska - was assistant coach for WB, played and coached at UTSA http://www.goyotes.com/coaches.aspx?rc=305 Amy Williams (Rogers State WBB) 97-65 – left to be WBB HC at South Dakota, now WBB HC at Nebraska - was assistant coach at Tulsa, OSU http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=210881343 Justin Barkley (Rogers State MBB) – 142-62 – Currently still MBB HC at Rogers State, was assistant coach at RSU http://rsuhillcats.com/coaches.aspx?rc=179&path=mbball Mark Kellogg (NW Missouri WBB) – 15-13 – Currently WBB HC at SFA – SFA website says 15 wins was 9 win improvement during his lone year. Went on to WTAMU before going to SFA, was sitting HC at For Lewis College http://www.sfajacks.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/mark_kellogg_967521.html Total record 326-164

  21. While QB is the single most important position on the team, it won't make any difference who starts if the offensive line doesn't protect him and his receivers don't get open and catch. How's that for being Capt. Obvious? With that said, I think Fine goes in as your starter with the others given every opportunity to unseat him. There are no sacred positions on this team. Put the best players on the field regardless of their classification, star rating or anything else.

  26. I think all 3 will pick up the offense well. The issue is reading defenses. Who will be able to make the right reads and be able to take advantage of the mismatches. Fine hurt teams by running, but he's gonna have to be able to hurt teams by throwing too. If not, he won't hang onto the job. The good teams aren't going to lose to a qb that can't hurt you in the air.

  32. I listened to Dana Holgorsen last week. He said he cares less about recruiting rankings. He recruits to his needs and who he thinks can help his team win. He made the comment that his 2012 recruiting ranked in the 50's, they reshuffled the rankings this year and that class was moved to the Top 10. Everyone needs to tap the brakes on the negativity. 3 years ago, we would have never been in the running for some of the kids we lost, ie McNeal. At least we had a chance at him this time. We all have to agree we needed WR's and OL. I think we did well in those areas.

  33. Interesting. Hate to harp on this, but maybe if our recruiting budget was 2nd in the conference, we'd see the fruits of our relatively highly ranked assistant coaching pool budget.

Played for Leach in the 90s Coached with Leach when Graham Harrell was a player Coached at LT and MTSU So he's got plenty of mid major and P5 experience. http://www.troytrojans.com/coaches.aspx?rc=934&path=football

  35. All I'm saying is guys like Waters - and Y'barbo was mentioned in another thread - have zero coaching experience. That's a risk that needs to be considered. Obviously, Gill does not fall under the umbrella of my previous post.

  36. I love JJ and might even fly back if/when he gets into out HOF to attend the event just because I'm that big of a fan. HOWEVER, historically when a coach goes back to a place he previously had success the returns aren't as good. I'd rather JJ rebuild his reputation elsewhere.

  40. Orrrr, given the ordeal that rape victims have to go through, these women may want to hit Baylor the only place it hurts while also avoiding having their names be part of this circus. A criminal trial means their names become public...and every defender of rape culture with their "what was she wearing", "was she drinking" or "was she being flirtatious" garbage will crawl out of their holes. Then, after the public scrutiny phase, the girl gets to relive the event while a defense attorney questions her level Of promiscuity and paints her as a liar (and you are a FOOL if you don't think Baylor would throw a crap ton of money towards the criminal defense of these young men to avoid the PR hit of multiple convictions). So, no, I don't just readily assume that this is a group of gold diggers out to sully Baylor's good name. I have two daughters and I would wholeheartedly support their attempts to seek justice, regardless of the avenue they chose to seek it.

  41. I am so bummed about UNT right now. I get psyched up and huddle in front of the TV to watch BYU of the West Coast Conference and Long Beach State vs UC Irvine Big West Basketball and don't even follow my alma mater after football. So many emotions about this program right now: 1. I feel like Football is on the right track, but I see San Antonio making amazing waves. So is our football on track and if so will it even be enough to beat the likes of UTSA, La Tech and FAU in the future. 2. Is Wren Baker Rick Villareal? I don't want to believe so but I don't see the drain the swamp energy I was hoping for - How on earth does Benford still have a job. How can he touch my great University and be allowed to bludgeon my degree week by week on his way out. 3. My Running Rebels suck, everything North Texas stinks right now in February. I root on the Cougars of BYU while wondering what happened to my Great University and do they even have a plan. Rick didn't. Wren doesn't seem to. This upside down state of Mean Green Athletics has just taken its toll. Nevertheless. GMG P.S. - I don't want and am not asking for cheerleaders in Green and White. I am looking for fearless decision makers, expert communicators and highly visible actions makers. None of these people except maybe SL seem to be present in Denton right now. Example, I met a rep from the Texas Legends who has communicated with me often over the past 10 days, got me out to a Texas Legends games and has me signed up for 2 networking events to get involved. Has anything ever moved that fast in Denton without a 66-7 drubbing and worst loss in college football embarrassment drumming before? It should be happening every single day to our completely lost thousands of alumni. I even have trouble encouraging my niece to attend UNT because she wants a cool college experience, which as an athlete includes connection to and involvement of athletics even from a spectator perspective. That's crazy and definitely a first in my 31 years of being a brand ambassador for this University.

  42. To state it bluntly, not a time for a project hire. We have to counter the Lone Star State recruiting shellacking we've gotten & that long before Seth Littrell's 1 year in Denton. We have a marketable package to sell. Get the multi-star stars in Littrell's penthouse office over-looking the best damn looking football stadium in CUSA & let him work his quiet psychology we all saw him use on the BTG TV series & let's see some different results unseen in years at UNT. You can't sign 3, 4 or 5 star recruits unless you get them on campus first. ➡️ Fry said if he could just get them on our campus he could sign a wagon full of them.
