  2. I had a meeting today with a client's son who is the head football coach at a local high school in Frisco, so we got to talking about football and colleges that recruit their players. He mentioned that the school's QB got offered a full scholarship a couple of years ago after his freshman year to Clemson--a guy you may have heard of, Chad Morris was the OC at Clemson back then. For obvious reasons, an SMU offer is now being looked at. So that led me to ask him about UNT and Coach Mac. The dad said something really good, but also vey telling--he said, the UNT coaches are visible and they are very engaged, but the only kids that have any interest in looking at them on offense are the linemen. He said his son and the coaches like McCarney personally, but the only skill kids that have any interest in playing in Denton are those who run non-spread offenses, of which there was one in their district. He said it will always be tough to convince kids to play in an offense like that because coaches and players today think its just flat out boring. I told him that the fans think its boring, too, unless the defense and special teams make up for it. Granted, this is one coach's view in the Metroplex, so you can take it for what it is worth, but it basically confirmed a big part of what we have thought about our QB issues--we can't get decent QBs here that can turn into something, in part because they won't come here, or because they won't get the chance to be developed into anything other than the busdriver. We just gotta pray that Mac's strength of developing linemen and solid hard-hitting defenses will show up in the upcoming years. Otheriwse, the next three years are going to be a lot like the other years around here for the last 10 years, sans 2013.

  4. My wife is an Ohio State alum along with most of her family. I try my best to be a fan for her sake but frankly it's like rooting for the Death Star. So I put on a good face but secretly I hate them.

  5. For college? No. I went to UNT, so that's what I support. I cannot wrap my head around being a fan of multiple universities unless you went to multiple universities.

  6. I only cheer for the Mean Green. Anytime a G5 plays a P5 I do pull for the G5 school to win, unless that G5 is SMU, in which case I hope that they lose by 70.

  7. So basically nothing has changed on the board or in UNT fandom in general in the last 14+ years... ...and people say we don't have traditions!

  8. Hard to convince players to come play it? Hell... Try convincing people to come ( or come back and) watch it.

  10. I also very much dislike players that don't want to finish out their careers playing in front of empty arenas for a garbage coach. WTF are we supposed to do?

  14. Very good news. Hopefully he's our team's guy. I hope he has an o-line too. On a side note, I don't know if Mac thinks a lot before he speaks. Speaking about how behind a player is instead of expecting great things out of him is not a great way to motivate. It gives the appearance of playing favorites and at the end of the day its bad leadership. Publicly he should have spoke about how talented he is, what a great recruit he is, the great news of his eligibility and privately he should have spoken to the player about expectations and goals. That's just me though...

  15. People have different priorities in life and using a vacation day to go to a football game may not be a high one for some. Just because it is something that you want to do doesn't mean you should judge others for felling differently. We should not be in the habit of shaming other fans for making those kinds of choices, we need every fan we can get.

  16. Just wanted to say hello. Thank you for the recruitment. It's an honor. My dad is 6'10 and played in the NFL and CFL. I hope to see the Apogee soon. I've got a few years to go but I'm growing and getting faster and stronger. I am excited to be considered by maxpreps and rivals. 23. You could also flip that around and say that he is using it to motivate DS by reminding him of how he put himself behind by failing to take care of business in the classroom, and that he will have to work overtime to catch up. Part of leadership is to put your key people under a little stress and see if they focus, or fold.

  24. Root For: IOWA - Father, two brothers, wife and I all graduated from Iowa. I've been looking forward to the Mean Green game at Kinnick Stadium for a long time! OU & Northwestern: Daughter is an alumnus of both. Root Against: The Ohio State, Michigan and SMU

  25. I'll root for most G5 teams, except $mut. I do like to see the American Airlines Conference fail though. I root for TCU because my mom is an alumni, but I wouldn't cheer for them against NT I root for Marshall because my dad is from the same town, but once again, I would not cheer for them against NT I actually hate $mut, but still have to mention it. I hate Ohio State because they are just like texas college. I think the world would be a better place if tu ceased to exist. OH, and I like pie...and tacos.

  26. I see little comparison between the two athletes's situation. One was a star softball player and the other a potential QB for the Green. I see the softball situation just the opposite from Vito, it is a lot muddier. Athletes seek greener pastures all the time on their own or urged/forced by their coach. Williams was not going to play much and he is gone, happens everywhere. The softball situation is a lot different, Schoblocher was the star of the team and would have been no doubt the featured player her senior year. She is also at this point not transferring, she is just not going to play. There is also the small detail that rumors persist that the softball problem involves many more players. Making the tale even more complex as mentioned in Vito's older blog that Schoblocher's issues concern the assistant hitting coach. This is strange because Schoblocher just had one of the best years in NT history at the plate and showed amazing gains.

  27. Unbelievable, a lot of you chastise a player for opting to go somewhere else and at the same time continually knock Benford and the program. I don't see how you can think both, partially when he is apparently going to a school much higher on the bb food chain. My view is I doubt he would have made much difference at NT anyway. Most of the touted transfer players Benford has pulled in have been mediocre at best and the centers have been much worse than that. I like the guy they just signed as much as Kouassi.

  28. Followed Arkansas as a youngster because of my family. I also liked Ohio State way back when Schlitster (sp?) was their QB. Loved watching him but his gambling problems and Woodie Hayes ended all of that. Their recent AD's comments about the G5 schools solidifies my hatred of them. Only follow NT now. Hate SMU because they are SMU. I also hate UT because of all their t-shirt fans that love them yet never took one class there. My hatred also stems from their arrogance towards everyone else and predicting A&M's failure in the SEC. Love how the Aggies have proven them wrong.

  29. P5 root for: Tech (wife is an alum); A&M (dad went to fire school there) G5 root for: none really (I guess maybe Tx State since I live fairly close and they are similarly situated to us) P5 root against: I hate the Longhorns because I live in Austin and these people are delusional about how great they are G5 root against: I HATE all things SMU and hope they lose to every team on their schedule until the end of time AND I wish them gristle and over or undercooked meat at each gameday "boulevard". I also hope that Abercrombie runs out of pink polos for their punk-ass fans to wear and hope that their sockless loafers rub blisters on their feet. F 'em!

  31. So, if I'm not able to get that day off, provided my schedule doesn't change with maybe a week's notice, and drive down 6 hours, and then potentially drive 6 hours back to possibly work the next day, is that a weak ass excuse?

  36. Grew up watching TCU games at Amon Carter so they always have a place in my fandom. Texas is up there, family ties and always enjoyed the Horns. I usually want Navy to do well. Went to my first Army-Navy game last year and I highly recommend the experience. I root for George Mason because I have a grad degree from there also. And they are actually successful sometimes! I actively root against SMU (duh) and most other Texas schools especially A&M, Tech, and Baylor. I do have a soft spot for Rice I guess since they were always such a SWC underdog.

  43. I'm torn on the TCU/A&M super. For me, TCU can go suck rocks, but on the other hand, I really don't need the Aggies prancing around the office. Dallas Baptist put up a great fight. This would've been their second super. The first time is the reason they got that new stadium. They had earned the right to host the super that year, but had no facilities to do so. I've been to supers at LSU. Crazy environment. I mean crazy. And yes, it'll be standing room only. No way ULL gets past them playing at the Box. No way. The state government won't allow it. I had a LOT of fun watching post season baseball in Baton Rouge, but they really, really game the system to their advantage. Of the remaining teams, I'm obviously pulling for Big West conference mate Fullerton, and I always have a soft spot for Virginia. My school has lost in the post season twice to Virginia, both times just barely, and it was heart wrenching, but their program and their fans are about as classy as it gets.

  46. GOMG2013: Year 1:True freshman with NO other scholly offers just happens to come in his very first game game for the sole purpose of scoring the first touchdown in our long-awaited new stadium. Thompson goes down and same true freshman starts over a 3 star 6'4" juco transfer. Goes on to finish the season with 1 TD and 3 INTs. Year 2: Thompson stays healthy so true sophomore redshirts. Year 3: Thompson is a senior and has his best year, we go bowling and redshirt sophomore is relegated to mopup duty. Year 4: Game 1, backs up a 6'5" 2 star juco transfer, juco goes 2/11 for 8yds and 1ints, redshirt junior comes in to go 1/6 for 7 yards with 2INTs(1 for td). Game 2, juco transfer goes 9/12 for 86yds, no int or td, rs junior comes in for mopup duty, goes 3/5 for 22yds, no ints or tds. Game 3, juco goes 13/27 for 77yds with no int or td, falls out of favor, redshirt freshman comes in and goes 5/7 for 98yds and leads 3 td drives. No redshirt junior this game for unknown reasons. Game 4, fanbase pressure leads to redshirt freshman being named starter, has good game against very poor opponent going 11/14 for 176yds and 3tds. Redshirt junior comes in to mopup going 2/3 for 26yds, no tds or ints. Game 5, redshirt freshman struggles but is only qb to see action, goes 18/34 for 205yd, 3td, 2int. Game 6, redshirt freshman becomes turnover machine, goes 11/21 for 124yds 1td 2int(both tds) and finds his way to the doghouse. redshirt junior comes in and goes 9/14 for 167yds and 1 td. good game Game 7, redshirt junior new starter, only qb coach trusts, goes 20/35 for 287, no ints or tds, good game Game 8, redshirt junior goes 15/33 for 186yds 1td and 1int(for td). not a good game Game 9, redshirt junior goes 12/16 for 107yds 1td and 1 int, not a good game Game 10, redshirt junior goes 16/28 for 107yds 1td and 1 int, not a good game Game 11, redshirt junior goes 9/20 for 105yds 1td and 2ints(1 for td), terrible game but is not benched as his predecessors were Game 12, rs junior goes 24/43 for 287yds and 1td, good game McNulty is just as turnover prone as the other quarterbacks and is in no way a better "bus driver". That narrative is a boldfaced lie to allow a certain extended family member to live his dreams as a D1 qb. I have no doubt that DW would have performed better in games 8 through 11 and believe Greer might have too(his performance in games 2 and 3 are no worse than McNulty in games 8-11). McNulty should have been benched in game 11 but wasn't because of the favoritism that you say does not exist.

  48. No, I am not taking this time to complain about DD. He is ridiculously horrible at calling plays.. but that isn't what this point is about. The cheerleaders are the worst I have EVER seen. They stand facing the game and only start the "DEFENSE" chant after someone in the crowd gets it going first and then the cheerleaders turn around and join in. The entire 4th quarter was 3rd and 4 type situations. We needed noise. We needed the defense to know we had their back. The cheerleaders only seem to cheer themselves. I am thankful for the cones they handed out before the game. I actually was calling out the cheerleaders to do their job. "Come on CHEERLEADERS we need you! DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE" "Come on CHEERLEADERS do your job! DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE" "Come on CHEERLEADERS cheer! DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE" "Porkchops porkchops greasy greasy. Scoring on the Bulls is easy easy." ... anything to get the crowd and cheerleaders in to it. When I yelled this, the curly haired love-handle cheerleader turned around and shot me a glare.. then they turned around and joined in. A male cheerleader pointed at me in a threatening way and squinted his eyes. I thought of the movie Bring it On. Sparky Pollanski said, "Cheerleaders ... are dancers gone retarded." I didn't care. I kept calling them out each time. What is the point of chanting defense between plays or while the play is going on?! I think they do it because then they are the only wons being heard. I propose that FFR gets a megaphone and stands in the front row and gets the crowd going. I know he can do it... He who is stunned by this loss, SWB
