  1. We have been taking the trip to the “body bag” game for 13 years now and in my opinion this was by far the best the team has played in that time. During the game we heard many UGA fans making comments about the game. In the first half we were hearing “this is embarrassing”, “we are not playing well” and “Why can’t we move the ball?” By halftime the comments changed to “North Texas is better than we expected” "we can loose this game" and “we were caught off guard by a good team.” After the game as we were walking around the campus and city we had UGA fans stopping us telling us “You have a good team”, “that game scared the hell out of us”, “Your D-line and linebackers are as good as we have seen”, and my personal favorite “Y’all are by far the hardest hitting team we have played all year!” Just some comments heard in Athens that I thought I would share. 2. Back in 1968 or 69 my wife and I drove out to Denton to visit a friend (Sheila) who was attending NTS. The big man on campus was Mean Joe Green, of course. Sheila was tutoring Joe that year. We went out to a pizza place, and in walked Joe. He came over and sat with us for about half an hour, and we really enjoyed his company. Sheila said he was a big old teddy bear everywhere except on the football field. Anyway, I have always kept a soft spot for North Texas ever since, and through the years would look for your scores. When I saw that North Texas was coming to Georgia, I looked forward to the game perhaps more than some other UGA fans. Quite frankly we, as a group, expected to just roll our helmets out there and win the game quickly and easily. All the talk during the week was how much playing time our backup players would get. A funny thing happened on the way to our party; a real football game broke out! There had been some background rumblings about North Texas being a skilled and tough team, and sure enough, there was the Mean Green standing toe to toe with one of the SEC tough guys. I just wanted to stop by and and wish the Mean Green much success this season. You earned a lot of respect in Athens on Saturday.

  3. There have been numerous debates on here for years on what the challenge is for this program: coaching, budget, recruiting, attendance, wins, etc. etc. I think the biggest challenge this program has is perception. And even though the end result in Athens, GA yesterday wasn't what we began to hope for....the program took a big step in helping with our biggest challenge. UNT already has the cards stacked against it given this location. What helps us (being in Texas, DFW, hot bed for recruiting) also hurts us (now 12 FBS programs in TX, 3 within 30 miles, old SWC focus, big 12 bias). Oh yeah and a loooong history of irrelevance in football. (apologies to the Hayden Fry fan club) We've heard the term "sleeping giant" thrown out. Some roll their eyes at it, others hold out hope that it will rise. What I noticed yesterday as we were tied 21-21 halfway through the 3rd quarter with the SEC East preseason favorite, is what I believe is a pent up ground swell of potential buzz around this program. I started looking around twitter at this time to see what was out there. Now I'm not a big twitter guy...I follow mostly sports media and probably check it once a week or so. But I saw mean green buzz like I've never seen. Corby Davidson tweeted about The Mean Green. Bill Jones. Sean Bass. Tim MacMahon. Chris Fowler. (yes ESPN Gameday Chris Fowler....and his tweet was an apology for the NTSU mess up. someone called him out) Greg Williams. Keith Whitmire. Brett McMurphy. Etc. Etc. Local media as well as national media. Harry posted several twitter snap shots as well. The Mean Green all the sudden became......"cool" with 7 minutes left in the 3rd quarter of a "body bag" game. They started trending. This morning, I searched the headlines: "Georgia pulls away to avoid upset vs. North Texas" "N. Texas hangs tough, but falls to No. 9 Georgia" "Georgia defeats North Texas in a tough one" "Georgia rallies against gritty North Texas" "Georgia forced to pull away later than hoped" Now they weren't all in that vain but what headlines like that do for our program is add some relevance. Regardless of the final score, those headlines shine a positive light on the program. WE NEED A LIGHT SHINED. What this program needs is some "cool." And you become cool in college football by getting your name mentioned on twitter and on ESPN. Why is that important? That depends on your definition of "sleeping giant." Our sleeping giant is the 100K+ alumni and 36K+ students in this area. SMU doesn't have that. TCU doesn't have that. They can't. We already have that. All we need now is to improve our perception. And the sleeping giant that stirred oh so gently yesterday may just open its eyes. All around the metroplex yesterday as twitter blew up, this sleeping giant said, "man...UNT is hanging tough with GA." "Hey, what's going on with UNT?" "Hey...I went to UNT!" At 2-2 with every game left on the schedule winnable, what a tied score in the second half at #9 GA does is puts an eye slightly up I35. If we beat Tulane, it won't be, "Tulane sucks." It will be "hey, UNT's pretty good.....they went toe to toe with GA." If we take care of business in NO and come back to what will be the largest crowd of the season and beat a good MTSU team.....it will be "UNT is 4-2....headed toward a bowl." It won't be "they don't play anyone." Every win will be followed by "They went toe to toe with Georgia." That combined with the increased ease of getting the message out is the difference between our previous bowl run and this one. And make no mistake....we are in a bowl run. Get on board. I fully expect this team to beat Tulane. With these players and this staff.....we should. Monday at work....you will hear non-UNT grads congratulate you. You will hear "man ya'll looked good on Saturday, Ya'll gave them a game." And the grads you do work with, that have been cowering in the corner for years will start to pick their head up a little bit...might even read an article on their alma mater....the crazy ones might dust off that green pennant that's been in their closet. What happened halfway through the 3rd quarter is our perception improved. And the message got out quickly. We have a real D1 coaching staff. A team that believes in one another and a preemptive light shined on UNT. Now if we do what this team is capable of doing, we will continue to improve our media position (social and otherwise) People that are associated with UNT in some form or fashion heard about UNT yesterday. And they were able to be proud. What may seem like a small step was actually a big one.

  7. "Perception is reality." - Axioms of Truth. CBS Channel 11 News, ABC Channel 8 News, and NBC Channel 5 News all gave huge props to "The Mean Green of North Texas" last night. Every sports anchor made a big deal about our performance in the game against Georgia. And every one of them showed the highlights of us scoring all three touchdowns against UGA. NBC gave us the lions share of the sports coverage. CBS and ABC gave us equal coverage time in relation to UT-Austin, TTU, and TAMU. Each anchor said phrases like, "What's happening up in Denton" and "Go Mean Green". It was the most coverage I have ever seen UNT receive from all the local newscasts on a College Football Saturday night. On ESPN, after the UT-Austin and KSU game, the ESPN anchor said, "Georgia survives North Texas" as he began the recap of the game. It was great to see all the positve and respectfull coverage. It was obvious that the local sports anchors were genuinely excited about reporting on how well our team did. Because of our huge and respected RTVF program, we have alot of alumni that work in all areas of the media. And they are part of "The Sleeping Giant." And they are hungry to report on a winning Mean Green Football program. In order for one to move forward, one has to buy into the future. He who lives on the past, dies looking backwards. The paradigm shift in perception for our university to grow now and in the future is: We are THE University of North Texas. As the people believe, the giant awakes.

Week 1- Zach Orr, Defensive Player of the Week Week 3- Derek Thompson, Offensive Player of the Week Week 4- Brelan Chancellor, Special Teams Player of the Week Pretty impressive for a team that was picked to finish 5th in the West Division in the Preseason Poll.

  9. You know, after responding to MoGreens slap at the Alumni Association and doing my usual "glass half full" thing, it dawns on me what a positive change we see right here on GMG.Com regarding watch parties. Right here we have had threads about watch parties set up in: Denton -multiple locations Collin County Dallas San Antonio Arizona. So, how long has it been since we have seen anything like this in numbers? Long time I believe. So, sure not as many as some folks and smaller crowds than some, but it is a very positive sign of the momentum for support for the Mean Green that is building. And, in a few of these locations, we have dedicated folks who have stepped up to make sure these sort of events continue to build and become "must do" events for more and more alums. Well done, folks...really a great sign and speaks volumes about where the ship is headed for the future. Have a great time folks...Go Mean Green!

Mean Green will do some big things thats for sure... Mean Green will be my 2 team going forward... Maybe we should have gotten you in the SEC instead of Mizzou ROFL... anyway Great Game... 12. being cautious is understandable. Being so afraid to where you fear teams like Rice, UTSA, Tulane So Miss, and La Tech is ridiculous. I have seen these teams get more props on this board from some posters, than UNT. UTSA? Tulane? Really? UNT has looked better than most of the teams we play and that should be a reason for excitement.

  13. I think what everybody has to remember - be they "glass half empty" or "glass half full" - is that the Alumni Association's success is mostly determined by its members, who are...duh...alumni. We have a decent, though small, office staff, who cover the bases as expected by members/alums, but the only way real change can come is if alumni choose to be a part of the positive change you're talking about. In essence, putting down the Alumni Association (if you're an alum) is putting yourself and/or other alumni down for not making an effort. The only way I see this not being the case is if you tried to be involved and were somehow, for some reason, shut out. But aside from that unlikely/rare occurrence, remember that the UNTAA isn't responsible for decisions made by the Athletics Department, Regents, or anybody else. They can try to put some pressure in here and there, but without more people involved and active, that pressure is not very strong. So if you went to Mark or Rob or somebody else heavily involved and wanted to do something, and they said, "Hey, screw you buddy, go away," then I'd see how you could be mad. But neither one of them knew me at all when I started looking into making things happen, and they've helped out a lot, even more than I've asked, so I don't see how that seems likely. Even for those like MoGreen who are more involved and committed than others, we all have to remember that the Association is only as strong as the members make it. If alumni aren't involved, aren't excited, aren't helping...there's only so much you can do to convince them otherwise. The best we can do is keep carrying on as best as possible, do as much as each of us can/chooses, and hope it catches on a bit more. The fact is, the people who are responsible for our frustrations are those who don't want to even show up. But with more of us showing up, and helping out, and organizing, we do have a little bit of momentum...and even a little is a lot more than we used to have! So with more of us trying to get others involved, we can get more momentum and more members and eventually, more pull when we eventually have more than just our core group of people actively working towards any given goal(s). The only way for this to happen is to stay consistent, and to know that even if you're the only one sometimes, that's still a small victory because just by trying, you're helping more than most people have done over the years! It's true...frustrations about lack of growth and numbers aside, for all of us who REALLY care to just show up and maybe put together an event, we've already achieved a lot more than the status quo...not a big win, but a small one that has potential to grow! Go Mean Green Alumni! (I feel like I should say "Wonder Twin Powers Activate" or something after that.)

  14. You have Middle Tennessee too high in my opinion - maybe five or six, but not ready to think any higher. We've got an Offensive line that has not been completely healthy this season, Logan Kilgore doesn't seem to be particularly sharp yet - he did suffer an injury to his throwing shoulder in the first game, and our defense though improved from last season still has depth issues. We did manage to squeak by an improving Memphis two weeks ago (who stomped a mudhole in arky state on Saturday) and we were fortunate to get past FAU in OT. Raiders are a 21 or 22 point dog at BYU on Friday night, and the Cougars seem only slightly more schizophrenic than the Blue Raiders. I don't think even a win would clear up how good or not this team is.

  16. I saw a video where Joe Greene was talking about putting the Mean back in the Green and someone must have been inspired. My high school buddy and UT fan is putting in a Fuzzy's Taco in Athens and sent me a text saying the the Mean Green won the respect of the Dawg nation and how he had to brag about being from Denton. Those are good signs for our program. I think folks remember games like that more than the script on the side of the helmets. Our team is fun to watch and I hope the folks in Denton see it and come see it.

  17. I simply refer you back to the K. St. game last year. Much closer against a comparable opponent. And we ended up 4-7. These games only matter if you win them or keep it to within one score. Otherwise, they are fun, and that's it. We lost by 24. That is nothing to get excited about. Neither is a schitzo offense or a defense that gave up 650 total yards. Again, I'm excited by the Ball St comeback win, not by a game whose outcome was never really in doubt (did anyone really think we were going to score on special teams a 3rd time??) Tulane will tell the tale. Blow them out. On the road. That would be exciting.

  20. The cost of healthcare can't be discussed without overall policies. I'm not trying to turn this into a debate thread worthy of moving to the "Cage Fighting" thread but really, it's insane. Other countries that are considered "conservative" have universal healthcare without the excessive expenses. The reason I don't think this belongs in the politics thread is that the level of politics injected into the issue are unnecessary...calling it "socialized healthcare" is like saying we have a "socialized military". The biggest priority should be to keep people alive and kicking so that they can be productive consumers and taxpayers, so military and health should be part of the top tier of concern. The reason healthcare can be so expensive (depending on what type of care you seek, your preferred provider, your coverage, etc.) is because of the huge amount of money spent ON politics. The money spent on lobbying and faux advertising in the pursuit of brand equity is labeled as part of the free market, and is a deceit even to many who support "free market economics". And now that you probably think you have me figured out, let me tell you that I am a huge proponent of the real free market. Our ingenuity and development of new pharmaceuticals and medical techniques should absolutely yield positive results for the pioneers that advance them. But for your actual care, the taxation pay-in without the excesses of political lobbying funds and other excessive equity expenses would still allow for considerable funds for all of the providers and companies that house and utilize them. I could really go on about this quite a bit but really, the fact is that costs for countries that are far from socialists are so reasonable and we are the only ones that try to make it seem like a "commie issue". So if knowing you have care available becomes as natural as knowing you have a badass military, it becomes less of a political hot-button and more of a normal part of life. Level of care is not diminished, but the majority of excesses - primarily in terms of lobbying, equity attempts, and ads - are eliminated. So, in a sense, I suppose this post has, more than anything, been my defense in regard to why discussion of healthcare shouldn't be that much of a political issue. I know liberals and conservatives alike that think that this is a bizarre stance, but to me, there really is a parallel between saying "Our nation should have a military" and "Our nation should have health coverage". Politically, you may differ on the details, but when you remove the politics you're just talking about more reasonable rates that allow you to keep everybody healthy and alive.

  22. As I was walking through the terminal on the return flight, a guy asked if I was coming back from the game. He had never heard of North Texas before. I took the opportunity to inform him of our great university, our size, our program, and our football history. He said he would be routing for us this year. While we didn't shock the world, but we shook the hell out of her for 35 minutes. I cannot tell you how proud I was as I walked to the car through a sea of wet bulldog red with my head held high. We lost, but gained respect, recognition, and almost a cool million... It was a good day considering a 24 pt loss. I am now booking my trip to New Orleans. I hope to make each remaining game with the exception of Hattiesburg, and even that is subject to change. It has been a long time since I have been this excited about Mean Green football, and I hope it is contagious. Go Mean Green!

  28. I'm as pleased as anyone about our showing in Athens but we have a lot to correct before we can be strongly considered to win the CUSA championship. I think that winning the West Division might be feasible but I don't think that we are/will be that close to East Carolina or Marshall. Both have better offenses and defenses than we've shown. We are not that much stronger than those two and can't overpower the better teams. Our play-calling still sucks. We had negative yards running on first down until very late in the game, yet we continued to call the same running plays on first down. Our running game isn't cutting it. I don't know if the o-line can't run block or the backs just aren't quick enough to find the seam but our average per carry is eleventh of the 14 CUSA teams. It could be that we lack speed. Brown provided a change of pace last year but we don't seem to have a speed back this year. Our defensive backfield seems to have improved this year over last with the improvement of Buyers and the addition of James Jones but we are still giving up the big play. We are dead last in the conference in passing yards given up. Improve those areas and we could win eight or nine games and maybe even a bowl. Do nothing and we might still win six games because the conference is still pretty weak this year but Southern Miss and La Tech will be back soon (and they'll be in our division). We need to ge a leg up on them now.

  33. Your entitled to your opinion but I don't understand why you feel this way and can't separate the difference between a win of a winnable game (Ohio) and a close loss of a game no one had given us a whisper of a chance to even survive the first quarter in (Georgia). What about the future? Doesn't it make you excited for the future and what these coaches might be able to build here? It does me. If nothing else here is something I took away from this game. With 3:45 to go in a game which we were expected to lose by 36 1/2 points we had played the 9th ranked team to a 14 point game till this field goal. I have been to many if not most of the body bag games over the course of the past 29 years. I can attest that with the game under 4 minutes to go have I rarely ever witnessed our defense STOP all the starters of a top 10 team's offense on our own 27 yard line and force a field goal. Usually by that time in these games our defense has been completely worn down and had given up. Not this time. Afterwards, they didn't come off the field relieved or happy that it was finally about to be over. They came off the field screaming and pissed off at each other because they had just given up 3 points with 3:45 to go...basically sealing our fate. For me, that defensive stand was a point of importance in behavior and attitude change displayed by this team that I would hope most noticed and realized that things are looking up. No one is happy about a loss, but considering how poor we have been recently, it's a great sign of things to come.....SOMETHING TO BE EXCITED ABOUT. Regardless of the score it shows that even coach Dodge's players were in fact capable of being very good once placed in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing. By the way, yes, this was a close loss..(should have been 17 instead of 24)... because I dismiss the last garbage TD due to the fact that our size and depth at that point had finally caught up to us and the fact we didn't even have all of our starters in the game there. I'm guessing here, but I think our coaches must have thought that Richt would sit on the ball with 2 minutes to go and he didn't. Sarge was on the bench. He was spent...done. Fought his ass off the whole game, and Georgia slipped around his side and ran it down to the 1 on a single busted play. That's what we get for hesitating I guess, but I just don't think we expected it. Lesson learned. Rick

  37. This is the absolute truth. It is up to the alumni. UNT's alumni--hopefully--are starting to wake up and realize that. This place HAS to get out of the "it's the AD's/coaching staff's/BOR's responsibility to..." mentality. Yeah, yeah, yeah...I know what their job is. It's the same as at every place. The way you move your program forward and KEEP it moving forward is through the alumni--REGARDLESS of what any of those groups do.

  38. Okay, so in this awesomely weird thread this is what I've gleaned: 1) For an explosive Georgia offense with at least one Heisman hopeful and tons of potential NFL-level talent to put up about 100 more yards against us than they did against highly ranked Clemson and South Carolina is deplorable. 2) 45-21 is a blowout that nobody should have any good feelings about, like 77-0 or 49-7 or 70-7, no matter what the press and everybody else who never paid attention to us before says. 3) Dungeons and Dragons rocks if played while posting some semblance of flirting with a married former NCAA women's basketball player, with or without a basement or photos of feet. So, back to the original point of the thread, and adding to what a few others said about level of competition... Remember, I'm a mechanics/training/conditioning guy that only played a few flag football games, so of course my opinion is based more on preparing for competition than the nitty-gritty specifics that some of you have at your disposal. But this is still a pretty simple point. Especially where the offense is concerned, everyone noticed how poor the running game was, as well as the missed or dropped passes. But as the good little nerd who worked hard to find ways to compete with the guys with tons of experience, what I saw BEFORE each potential reception was a level of coverage that was tough to beat. Not only speed, but also the agility in being able to spin and juke a bit wasn't where it would need to be if you expect to compete with guys at that level. That's where the key issue comes in...the other teams we're going to play aren't at that level. A half-step advance over Georgia's basically semi-pro-level coverage would have been the difference on a few key plays and probably could have won us the game. Even with our defense giving up those few big plays against an offense that is also pretty much at a semi-pro level, that tiny bit more "speed and spin" effectiveness on a few potential receptions probably would have won the game, yes, even in the rain. Our upcoming opponents will likely make adjustments and get better, but presumably so will we. It doesn't take a football guru to be able to isolate very specific sets of movements and the speed in which they are executed in order to determine a need. If we were expected to play at this level every week, that would be the primary focus for improvement. Doing so in CUSA is still preferable, but let me say this again, it will be very rare for any of the coming teams to have that level of efficacy so the key will be to just keep playing hard a la Ball State, consistently if possible since I agree that consistency has been one of our biggest problems for pretty much forever. I primarily addressed the passing game, because as far as the running game goes, it seemed to be more a matter of playcalling and reminded me of our 1, 2, 3, punt series we have been accustomed to against ranked opponents in recent history. I know a lot of the problem was that the pass inefficiency didn't help open up the run, but it was so predictable I was calling almost every offensive play before it happened in the second half. And if somebody who's just learning as he watches can pick that up, a top-10 team probably can as well. This is why I really hope I'm right about the speed and technique, and that it will be stronger against CUSA than it was against an SEC powerhouse. If so, the pass game will be similar to what we saw against BallS taters and Theydahoes, so there will be a greater opportunity for a good run in between.

  43. Anyone else think it is silly we only put the highlights of ourselves doing good things in these videos? I understand we are trying to paint ourselves in a good light, which is much deserved after that gutsy performance, but do we really need to see every time we stuffed their running back? I remember last year after the KSU game, the KSU website put up highlights after the game that showed all scoring plays for both teams with the home team radio call as the audio. It was really nice to see highlights that showed how the game went as a whole. Just my $.02. Regardless, I like very much that our video department uploads these videos so quickly after the game.

  44. I disagree, I thought McCarney's late decision to go for it on a fourth and long with that field position was crazy. The odds were against him and NT had no chance for a win, and to most casual fans the game would have looked a lot closer at 38-21. I couldn't believe this was the same coach that tried that fake field goal, punt that netted NT 11 yards in a situation I think most HC's would have went for the first down at time the game was still in play. An argument can be made that a loss is a loss, but a program like NT needs creditability and allowing Ga to tack on another score didn't help. I think NT would have been just as likely to get another score punting it away as going for it in that situation. Small criticism of McCarney, in a game that the pluses to me were much more than than the minuses.

  45. You and 90 have become two of the most hot air filled douche bags ever. You want us to jump from bottom of the Sun Belt to top of theSEC in three years with a third of the budget of the teams in the monopoly five. Good Lord, give these young men and our coaching staff some credit for performing well enough to have people that get paid to assess these games speak favorably of our program, Coach Mac and Coach Skaldany. Nobody on here is touting 7-5 or 6-6 as a measure of our return to greatness, but being bowl eligible after our last 8 years is great progress. There is no reason we can't either win out or finish 9-3, but this team is learning how to win and still as sone issues to fix. The only stats that matters are points allowed and points scored. Learn to enjoy this and pull off your shit colored glasses. Your D&D dork-a-thon awaits your return.
