  1. You're not a douche for wearing your school's apparel in public. If he was at a UNT event then yes, but there's nothing wrong with this picture.

  2. Danny Kaspar met all the criteria. Prior head coach experience. Successful head coaching experience. Knows how to recruit Texas. Probably would come to North Texas for less than a zillion dollars. Oh yeah, HE'S AN ALUM. He could be our Johnny Jones coming back after proving himself at SFASU. GO LUMBERJACKS GO MEAN GREEN

  3. Ok, here we go.... In 1971 at West Hall (not coed, of couse) I had a friend named Ross P. who had transfered from a small men's school in Virginia, Randolph-Macon, to throw javelin for our track team. As I was also from Virginia, we became friends, sometimes to my great regret. One day, Ross came into my room with a starter's pistol he had brought from track practice. His idea was to go to the pool room at West and fire at me. I was to "go down" and then we would watch the hilarity ensue. So, I go and get into a game of pool with some others. Ross comes in as planned, fires the pistol and I hit the floor. Next, he fires at someone else who also goes down. Now both of us are really concerned as this was not part of the plan. Turns out the guy fainted from fright. The rest of the people run out of the pool room into the street, zigging and zagging to avoid being hit with Ross in hot pursuit, firing away. I (quickly) returned to my room and began studying. In a matter of minutes, the place is crawling with the campus police, Denton police and the Texas Rangers. About 30 minutes later, Ross returns with his tail between his legs. Surprisingly, all the police did was give him a good dressing down and took his pistol away! It seemed a good idea at the time. I'll save the story of the time I put a scorpion in my roommate's bed for another occasion.

  4. You are thinking about Ark. St. Holmen went 5-5 on threes and 8-11 overall for 21 pts. He scored 10 against ULL. Although the way Bob Marlin defenses Tony, cutters and 3 point shooters could have a big game. Would love to see it be Overlander. Bob is not going to let Tony beat him. When Tony gets the ball, he puts 3 guys on him. It works. ULL has won 4 of 5 against NT with Tony, and if not for Walton's 3 pointer with a few seconds left, it would be 5 for 5.

  7. Wow. Our record this season against those four teams in our half of the bracket is 1-7. But, we have turned it around as of late, so hopefully we can continue our hot streak. GMG!

  10. LaRussa or any older coach is not the answer to a new program. You need a YOUNG assistant from a major college, a successful program. Someone with tons of energy. Being that the 2012 college WS champions was Arizona I would go after Sean Cole or maybe from UT Skip. But Skip probably wouldn't come. Whoever you get you need recruitment coverage, meaning someone from the Pac 12 would give you inside into west coast, AZ and even Tx. Then you hire your assistants from south Tx and north texas. Someone from somewhere like Grayson and San Jac. That secures your Tx recruits plus gives you pac 12 area. Just two cents from someone with 20...

  12. I believe the purveyors of the term "<big 12 school> douche" can help us with a handy definition of what makes someone said douche since they are highly esteemed here on GMG.com (well, by most). To the best of my recollection, it is: 1. Someone who obviously did not attend the school who's apparel they are wearing. 2. Someone who changes their apparel with whoever the winning flavor-of-the-week happens to be. 3. Someone who shows up to UNT games decked out in their <big 12 (and now SEC) school> gear despite not attending the school they are sporting. In the photograph posted above, in order for the gentleman in question to be labeled "Texas Douche", we are able to sift options 2 & 3 since this gentleman is wearing UT gear (certainly not a winning flavor of the week, maybe in 2006, but not today), and he is at Jupiter House Coffee shop, not at a UNT sporting event. We must be able to deduce that he did not attend the university. With the information we're provided in the photgraph, it is simply not possible to label this man "Texas Douche". "Avid Longhorns fan"? Yes. "Texas Douche"? Unknown. The child is another case study. He obviously meets the criteria of not attending the school he is sporting. However, he is not yet old enough to dress himself and/or buy his own clothes, so he cannot be labeled a douche either as his apparel is purchased by the gentleman in question. Hope that clears things up.

  13. The child was born into a family of Longhorns. It's not his fault but it's his problem to overcome. If you want to see fewer children tormented in this way, send your dollars to "Clothe the Children in Green." Apogee Stadium Station, Denton, Texas 76201.

  16. Uhm, every school that plays in bowls instead of playoffs is in a BCS conference according to the rules set up by the Bowl Championship Series. What the coach is saying is he thought they were an FCS school before.

  21. One thing to remember is that prior to 1972, freshmen were not eligible for varsity competition. So when you look at stats and accolades of Abner Haynes, Steve Ramsey, Ron Shanklin, and a host of other old timers; remember that a lot of their stats would be significantly higher if they played four years like more modern players such as Maher, Cobbs, Dunbar, and others.

  35. If he earns it, then so be it. I don't care who wins it as long as the one who earns it in practice translates it into success on the game day playing field. We are all thinking bb will win the job, but if mcnulty out works him and earns it, the so be it. He brings his lunch pail every workout. That is the point of competition.... Playing time will be earned by someone. If it is mcnulty, then so be it.

  40. He'll go down as the most misused/underutilized talent in North Texas history. Had he ever once taken the court next to a big man even approaching the level of a Wooden, Williams, Big George, or Tramster we'd be referring to him as the greatest player in our history.

  42. Ken Washington came to North Texas because Hayden Fry promised him that he would play QB. Every other school that recruited him wanted him as a WR or RB.....or athlete. To Hayden Fry's credit, he kept that promise. Ken Washington had a very strong arm, but he was very inconsistent with it.....and he had no touch on the ball. He would often fling it down field, rather than throw it. You are right, he didn't run first, but he did get happy feet pretty quickly, and then proceeded to do his Fran Tarkington imitation.....which often resulted in a big loss. Never in the same class? Ken Washington's best year of total offense was 1974...1523. Joe Stevenson's only year of full time starting (1980) 1671. Joe started at least one game in 78 and probably 79. I know for sure he started the So. Miss game in 78 and kicked their asses 25-12. If your meaning is that Ken Washington started every game when he was healthy, then you are right. He was so often injured in the middle part of his career that Glenn Ray (75) and Ken Smith (76) are listed in the stats book as the passing leaders those years. A good friend of mine was the sports editor of the Gainesville Newspaper during that era and covered North Texas football. He told me (at that time) that many of the players on the team thought that Glenn Ray and Ken Smith were much more effective in moving the team than Ken Washington. But every time that Ken Washington got able to play during the 75/76 seasons, he immediately put Washington in regardless of how effective Ray or Smith were being in moving the team. So when I say that Ken Washington was Hayden Fry's Andrew McNulty, it's in reference to Coach Mac starting McNulty during the 2011 season when he had (in many people's humble opinion) a much more effective QB standing on the sidelines in Brent Osborn. In the words of George Taki (Mr. Sulu on Star Trek)......Oh my! Now it's you who is losing credibility....unless you're just being intentionally provocative. Scott Davis a notch below Washington? More erosion of credibility here. Geez louise... Coach Fry would be too diplomatic to honestly engage in such a debate. Besides, one of the biggest faults that I've found with most coaches is that once they have made a decision about a player, they rarely admit that they were wrong....their egos get in the way. AND, as much as I love what Coach Fry did for North Texas he was not above telling a big whopper. He once told an Iowa reporter that he had gone out and raised 26 million dollars to built the coliseum here at NT. He wasn't even here when the coliseum was being built. And 26 million? I've posted the text of that on the board before. ...but just in case you have any doubts...... http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20040704/SPORTS11/50708005/Hayden-Fry-University-Iowa-2004

  44. While I've never had the opportunity to play in your game, I have caught it a couple of times as a spectator. I've been interested in coming down to play in it if I can make it work out that day. I see where it starts at 10am. What time do you think it will be over? I have to be at NASA-Clear Lake for an awards banquet and need to give myself time to contend with Houston traffic and grab a shower.

  45. If not for our period of practically dropping off of the map for close to 20 years, I think we could already be one of the "big boys". We've had to spend so much time recapturing the hearts of members of our own culture that we haven't had the opportunity to get back to where we should have been. If we keep moving forward as we have been lately, within 2 decades we will be at the level of Tech, Okla. State, and others in the top conferences who aren't quite to the level of UT, Michigan, Notre Dame, etc but are damned close. Also, keep in mind that when we were at our peak in the 60s-70s, alumni participation was discouraged and there was no chance of even allowing funds to be proffered. With the bureaucratic problems (at least of that sort) behind us and our current progress in the right direction, I like where we're headed.

EMMITT01....SO, are you game enough, brave enough or silly enough (you pick) to volunteer to be on Emmitt's team this year? All, kidding aside...very happy to see that Emmitt has decided to play again this year...in a push...if all others are down, whichever team Emmitt is on knows that they have their Tim Tebow in the house! Thanks, Emmitt...appreciate the support.
