  1. How awesome is it to be a freshman class of 2015 at the University of North Texas right now? I remember when I started back in 06, we had an enormous amount of problems athletically, and educationally and didnt know where the future lied for UNT. Now these freshman come in with a new stadium, renewed commitment to athletics (baseball program by the time they're seniors?) winning basketball program, new business and life science facilities, a fresh $22 million donation, plus $8 million more, and I'm sure more on the way, and new fraternity house construction (more people living on campus please) Not only this, they get free seats in the stadium. Oh, and Fry Street construction should be complete by their sophomore years. I'm jealous of them. What a great time to be a freshman. Now, if only the City of Denton could do its part.

  5. It's time for all of us not only to learn the words to our Alma Mater and Fight Song but to encourage others to learn them as well. It should be mandatory that everyone be in their seats before our team comes on the field. When the band starts the fight song and 20,000 + people are singing the words together in the stadium it will sends chills down the opponents backs. That would be the only time that everyone needed to sing the fight song together. You can if you want and it will always sound great in that stadium no matter how many are singing but the song is played to many times during the game, and thats ok! It would be awesome!!!!! Maybe only a few sing for the first time but much like the TCU chant some guy started during that game, this thing would mushroom fast. The other one is the Alma Mater. We need to play it and people need to learn the words and sing it. It is one if not the most beautiful Alma Maters in all of college football. Play 15 minutes before the game or better yet start it immediately after the game. Win Or Lose, joy or tears. It wont take long for more to join it. When the other team walks off the field to their locker room they will be moved whether they won or lost. As always..........imop

  9. Hmm. I say stay in Denton. We keep saying the stadium would be beneficial to the city, so let's encourage visitors to stay here.

  10. They will have a drop off area (prob at the old hotel parking lot) where you can drop your tailgating stuu, park your cr, and walk back and set up. This really isn't any different than t any other University, folks. You wanted a better stadium and real college game day experience? Well, this is part of the package.

  11. Oh, for sure! If you want the best, you gotta go with Frenchy's. Wait, I thought we were talking about food in this thread. Are Cougar fans moving here? Yes, we know... Apogee stadium is very nice, but you can stay in Houston.

  13. It would be an amazing time to come into the university, but all of these changes are great for everyone with a UNT degree. Every UNT degree is worth more than it was a few years ago and it's only going to get better.

  14. No one in Florida knows McCarney? Really? I believe he was on Florida's national championship team's coaching staff. Do you think a guy with the fire and personality that McCarney has just sat around the offices at Florida and never was seen in public? Really? Every staff in the Big XII and the SEC (to name just a couple of conferences) knows Coach Mac and so do many of the opposing fans whose teams played against Florida and Iowa State. He is a "Fry guy" and that makes him pretty well known to folks who follow college football, to high school coaches across Big XII and SEC territories and to coaching staffs across the nation. Nobody knows the guy, really? I'd take Coach Mac each and every day of the week over Leach...for many reasons. I want UNT to win and to win with respectability. I don't want a coach who is popular because he is a clown around the media, and one who really hasn't won anything...did I miss the year Texas Tech won the Big XII conference crown?

  17. I think we're severely overrating the McCarney hire. Sure he's a respected coach but unless you're in Iowa or have some sort of connection to Mac nobody really knows the guy. Leach is known and recognizable nationwide. As for FAU getting him....I highly doubt it since he can get something a lot better. But if they do get him then more power to them...it greatly increases the perception of the league.

  25. Tailgating is really not that complicated, I don't think. Go to the parking lot for which you have a parking pass. Park, then start tailgating. From what I was told, you can choose your spot up to 90 minutes prior, after that festival parking. Just like at Fouts, you can't pop up your tent and block the row unless all of the spots have been filled up. If you want to tailgate on a green area or an end cap area, get there early and back up to one of those spots, or get there later carry your stuff from where you park to where you want to be. As far as traffic, they are going to post online (maybe mail?) information on traffic patterns. Its stiil 25 days away, so I don't see any need to provide the information more than a few weeks in advance at the most. Otherwise everyone will lose it or forget it and the we will have a complaint post about how athletics didn't send out reminders on the traffic pattern.

  31. If you are tailgating next to beerman he is a whip and sings a few of his songs again and again and again, plus it is loud. But if you are out of earshot then go visit his set-up he is fine. He does add to the game day atmosphere.

  32. Does anyone actually ever do the math on any of this, or do you just make broad blanket statements without knowing why actions were taken or what the impact really was? For instance. The Texas budget for 2010 was 182 Billion, of which 75.5 Billion (or 41.1%) was spent on education, and 59.7 Billion was spent on healthcare (or 32.8%, mostly covering unfunded mandates from the federal government). So when you've got the two largest line items that account for 75% of total spending in the state, and one of them you don't have much room to wiggle because of there is a federal government mandate to spend the money, where do you think the biggest place you can cut is? This sort of parallels this situation in Washington, where nobody is willing to take on Social Security and Medicare and other Entitlements, even though not doing so only prolongs the problem, and a true solution to the debt situation CAN NOT EXIST without restructuring them. The difference is that the politicians in Austin tackled the issue, though unpopular, because the founders of the state had the foresight to understand that politicians needed to be forced to live within their means and thus included a balanced budget clause in our state's constitution, one of a very few number of oversights the founders of the nation made. So, in Austin, they handled it the best they could. Yes. They had to cut education spending as it was the biggest line item in the budget that they could actually do anything about. And they didn't cut it 10 billion like the fear mongers all claimed they would. Not 7 Billion. Not 5 Billion. ... but 4 billion in cuts to 75.5 billion dollar line item. Education spending was cut by 5.3%. ...and moreover, total spending was cut 15.2 billion. So this education spending cut accounted for 26.6% of the cut to the budget, even though education spending is 41.4% of total state spending. ...so it can be argued that they did everything they could to avoid huge cuts to education spending, and, indeed, forced the bulk of the cuts on other areas of spending. I find it funny that people in this thread attack the governor for a decrease in spending on state parks, education and their own pet project then start railing that he has overseen the largest increase in the state's debt in history (a debt which is the result of accepting municipal bonds and not state level spending, and that isn't serviced by interest payments, but let's still use it as a political hot potato since the average citizen doesn't understand this fact). I don't find Perry perfect, and he's done a good deal I wasn't excited with. His involvement with TTC and the HPV vaccine issue both are high on this list of things that I'm not a big fan of. He hasn't been as conservative as I'd like him to be. ...but when I look at the landscape of the folks in the GOP primary at present and narrow it down to the folks who could actually win the nomination, I then have to consider who of those people have the best chance in the general election. It's Romney or Perry. Given the choice, I'll take the guy who DIDN'T pass socialized medicine in their state. I predict he'll win the Nomination, grab one of the tea party favorites as his running mate. I think the early attacks from the Whitehouse on Perry indicate they believe he's the favorite as well. ...but to be honest, unless this economy REALLY improves quickly, which I don't see happening given the current (and likely future policies of this administration) I think we could nominate Elmer Fudd and beat Obama next year. The economy and the fact that it has gotten SO MUCH worse since he took office will be the albatross around his neck, and he will be Carter-ed for it.

  34. Here is what I was sent today from NT. It still does not answer the question about dropping things off in the old Radisson parking area then moving car to Fouts. Here's an overview on tailgating, parking and game day highlights. You can start tailgating as early as 8 a.m.: Arrive early for a full day of festivities, including the Mean Green March, live entertainment and the Junior Mean Green Fun Zone. Bring your tents, grills, smokers, food and beverages and set up your tailgate party in 26 acres designed to accommodate fans at the new Apogee Stadium. Tailgating opportunities also are available at Fouts Field and other locations on campus. Tailgating game day parking: Parking lots around UNT’s Apogee Stadium are reserved for Mean Green Club members. Fans can anticipate a short walk over the North Texas Boulevard bridge to the stadium grounds. Plans call for a pedestrian bridge crossing I-35E to be ready for the 2012 season. Paid parking is available at Fouts Field and free parking is available northeast of North Texas Boulevard on the main campus. For additional information on parking, traffic and pedestrian flow, visit meangreensports.com. Game day highlights: • 3 hours prior to kickoff: Enjoy live musical entertainment and the Junior Mean Green Fun Zone featuring rides and games for children of all ages adjacent to Apogee Stadium. • 2 hours prior to kickoff: Watch the Mean Green March including the Green Brigade Marching Band, North Texas Dancers, North Texas Cheerleaders, Head Coach Dan McCarney and the Mean Green football team. • 30 minutes prior to kickoff: Fans are encouraged to be in the stands to enjoy the Green Brigade pregame extravaganza and welcome the Mean Green to the field with the traditional public address call of “Heeeeeeeeeeere Comes the Mean Green ...!” • Postgame: Mean Green fans are encouraged to remain in the stands as the Green Brigade Marching Band performs the traditional Green Brigade postgame concert. 35. I think we can do better than the grove in my opinion once we get things worked out for Tailgating at The Village on the Green. But if they don't allow car batteries or generators in The Grove how are they powering up their tv's? Once we get it figured out that tree aproned hill is going to look pretty cool covered in tents. 37. ---Other than cheating problems... the demise of the SWC was largely triggered by the small crowds of Fans that TCU, Rice and SMU was bringing to games.. Baylor was bit better, (plus political connections) and was connected to the largest religious group in Texas. Not much has changed with those three except TCU is drawing good at the moment due to recent success.... but will that continue if they start to lose quite a bit.... doubt it. They have a rather small rabid fan base and small group of alums... Often their stadiums were filled with fans of the opponents and not their fans. They brought little to the conference in money, fans, interest, or recognition. ---We have a huge fan base available if we were in a better known conference and with better known opponents. We also need to develope several programs.... We aren't the ideal choice now.... but we have great potential with a lot of potential fans in a huge market of two million in the Dallas /Fort Worth area}... I may be nuts and biased but long term we look the best.

  40. It was a good run of +'s for me but I fully realize the -1's I am about to invite. Fuzzy's is a chain... and not even a good one. The DFW area alone consists of 26 of them including the one in Sherman. The greater Houston area where our guests will be traveling from already has 3. In fact, the chain is as far north as Madison, WI and as far west as Tempe, AZ. If we want to recommend Fuzzy's, we may as well also include Taco Cabana, Olive Garden, and Dairy Queen as a Denton Must-See attraction. If we must recommend a chain with Dallas area headquarters, I would prefer we send them to Baja in Grapevine or Blue Goose in Highland Village for some quality mexican food. Our Fuzzy's is most likely supporting Fort Worth as much as it is Denton. We are currently suffering through a local mexican food drought in Denton which Austin based Chuy's is not helping. I truly wish that either guapo's or mazatlan could resolve this issue but constantly finding small bones in every meal and not providing a good margarita has ruined their chances. I'll stick with pushing Metzler's, Rooster's, and J&J's until a true mexican food contender can step up and be worthy of my recommendation. I just wish Casa Galaviz had more to offer than great breakfast burritos. Love Shack is delicious and I'm proud the so-called "tool" owner is from here, but we are the 3rd and I have a terrible feeling that place will be all over the state in no time.

  42. THIS...everyone has PLENTY of warning...let's have no whining come game day if you don't arrive early. You can do this. Stay calm and just come early. Even early there will probably be some confusion. Remember, this is the first game for the UNT Police, the Denton Police, the Parking folks, the UNT staffers AND the fans. So, everyone is in exactly the same boat. Do your part by staying calm, listening to instructions, arriving early, car pooling as much as possible, obeying all traffic regulations (yes, including the crazy stuff regarding the Denia neighborhood), and by keeping a smile on your face. All here have waited for this day for a long time...let's enjoy it and not let anything take away from that enjoyment...especially not some issues with parking, tailgating, etc. We are probably in control of over 90% of how the day's experience turns out...for me...NOTHING is going to spoil that day! GO MEAN GREEN...simply cannot wait!

  44. It's almost like the majority of the posters know little about actual football -- probably from all the time they spent learning everything there is to know about marketing, design, stadium layouts, architecture, politics, famous priests, the economy, fundraising, internal communications and countless other disciplines. 47. I am not a big Perry fan for these reasons: 1. You have the question of Texas forcing female students to take Gardasil shots to prevent STD's over the rights of the parents. 2. You have the mega Trans-Texas Corridor that was going to be built by a Spanish company and use eminent domain to secure the land. This corridor was to begin on the west coast of Mexico where China is currently building one of the largest sea ports in this hemisphere. http://www.mexidata.info/id1278.html http://insightanalytical.wordpress.com/2009/03/12/maps-major-ports-usmexico-border-transportation-planning-fhwa/ 3. Accoring to The American Independent of 6-20-11 Texas has the highest number of entry level (minimum wage jobs) positions in the U.S. In Perry's defense...these are jobs vs. unemployment. 4. Tx. debt has doubled since Perry became governor. http://www.politifact.com/texas/statements/2010/mar/04/bill-white/white-says-texas-debt-has-doubled-under-perry/ 5. One of the worst records for education: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/editorial/outlook/7414727.html 6. If you are into conspiracy of the Bildiberger...he is a member: IMHO, Perry is part of "The Establishment" and would keep the United States on course from Bush...Clinton...Bush...Obama. Ron Paul, IMHO, is the only clear choice to undo what has already been done...however, it may be too late to fix.

  48. Every year they seem to modify the uniforms slightly so I'm not sure if they are going to have the same stripes. I do know they jerseys will incorporate stripes but I'm not sure how thick. My guess is they will be closer to the white uniforms in the poster (last years thin stripe uniforms). They will have three colors white w/ stripe; green w/ stripe and all black for matches they want to send a message I believe whatever uniforms they wear will be NIKE so there is a good chance you can pick up a similar jersey.
