Tony Mitchell Staying Put at UNT

Tony Mitchell brought North Texas fans to their feet throughout his freshman season by doing everything from hammering down highlight-reel dunks to swatting away shots.

On Monday night, he did it again, this time by telling them of his plans for the future.

“I’m blessed to have a chance to play at the next level, but I’m going to stay at the University of North Texas,” Mitchell said in front of a packed house at the Gateway Center.

The announcement that Mitchell, who was projected to be selected sometime late in the first round of the upcoming NBA draft, is staying for at least one more year was the highlight of UNT’s annual basketball banquet.

The 6-foot-8 forward played only 23 games with the Mean Green after becoming eligible at the semester break and averaged 14.7 points and 10.3 rebounds a game last season, a performance that earned him Freshman of the Year honors in the Sun Belt Conference.

Mitchell could have walked away like so many talented freshmen have since the NBA instituted an age limit that essentially requires players to spend only one year in college.

When he looked at what he experienced in his first season at UNT and the opportunities that would come if he returned, Mitchell decided he had more to gain by returning.
