UNT got pummeled in Tulsa last week. I don’t really have a problem playing McNulty, and I’ve hashed that out on the board, so won’t go into it here, but I take comfort in the fact that UNT fans here are just like other college fanbases in that they want success for their team, and usually can be counted on to knee-jerk a little. It’s the nature of the thing.
Regardless, UNT is 1-4 coming out of the “preseason” portion of the schedule, and if you told me that would be the record at this point, I wouldn’t have jumped for joy, but I’m mildly pleased.
The Kangaroo Crew comes to Denton this weekend, and it will be a good matchup in what I think is a very winnable game for North Texas.
Thompson should be ready to go, and a more experienced hand at QB will be a bonus against an Owls defense that features two pretty good defensive linemen in seniors Jarvis Givens, and Kevin Cyrille. Givens is a dominating tackle, and though Cyrille is not particularly big, he's very fast, and one of the better defensive playmakers on the FAU defense.
LB Cory Henry, a sophomore, has the potential to wreak havoc in the run game, and will be in the backfield in a hurry if the UNT OL struggles. He’s very good.
Alfred Morris is a fairly powerful (5-11” 225 lbs.) running back for the Owls, and he will need to be held in check to force FAU to pass. Against Louisiana he averaged 4.2 ypc, and has the ability to wear defenses down. FAU is going to throw the football a lot, however, and Nexon Dorvilus and Xavier Stinson are prime targets for 6’6” QB Graham Wilbert.
QB pressure is therefore key against this offense.
Wilbert is a good quarterback, and does not make a lot of mistakes, which is typical for a Schnellenberger-coached team. The Owl offensive line protects him well, and the Mean Green will have their hands full attempting to put pressure on him. However, UNT can have some success here if they can get to him, because Wilbert is not particularly mobile or much of a running threat, and the potential for three and outs is high if the run can be stopped first. I like UNT's chances here.
Offensively, I believe UNT can run the football with some success, but the OL will need to bring the same focus they had against Indiana to make this happen. Wide receiver has to be a factor in the game this weekend, and Thompson will need to be patient with his targets at receiver and be ready to run. Long drives, again, will be essential against the Owls to improve UNT’s chances in this game.
I’m giving the nod to UNT this week, but it could go either way, and I think it will be within a field goal.
Give me UNT 23-21.
