#595967 How Depressing This Board Can Be

Posted by SouthBendGreen on 08 October 2011 - 10:40 PM

While watching the Rangers game I thought I would log on to GMG and rejoice in the win and talk about another step forward for our program that has been SO BAD.

I had a smile on my face when I typed in the URL. I then clicked on the forum link with much anticipation. Then BAM, wind was blown out of my sail instantly.

Complaints about attendance, about the offense, the inability to find parking so people went home and more and more negative things. Remind me please, did we win 31-17?

UGH!!!

We won't go from a TERRIBLE program to conference contenders overnight. I see big improvements from the start of the season and that is all I can ask. DM isn't even using his players yet! He, Canales and Bowen are getting WAY more than TD and his staff ever dreamed from these guys.

I am losing my desire to check this board as regularly as I do. But regardless I will always keep coming back because I love my Alma mater and I need my drug fix that is discussing NT athletics.

I am literally disgusted to come on here after a win and read the crap that I have read.

I am sure I will get a bunch of negative clicks, but whatever.

We aren't LSU so quit expecting that. DM will have us back bowl bound soon enough, but I'm sure people here still won't think that is good enough.

What a shame!

#519532 Visibility Change On The Way

Posted by Glad To Be Green on 21 October 2010 - 04:46 PM

I couldn't agrre more that our current situation from a visibilty standpoint is not good. While the University has invested in billboards and ads they have never been about Athletics. With the budget we currently have we have been able to purchase a rotation on an LED board at Swisher Road pushing the new stadium but thats not enough impact on a regular basis.

But that will all change soon. By late spring our new interstate LED boards at the stadium will hit eveyone that travels up and down I-35 right in the the face. The west face of our new home will carry a big, beautiful University of North Texas 130 feet in the air. In addition the University is beginning work on a Home Team concept that will make us (it includes athletics) much more visible in the region. And despite the information posted in some places our restaurant partners program is bigger and stronger (now at 40) than ever including Rudy's and Texas Roadhouse.

But that doesn't finish the job. We need to have businessse put up flags and GO MEAN GREEN on their readerboards. We now have many businesses that are wearing green on Fridays, including the City of Denton employees but it needs to extend to all alums. And everyone must help. At LSU we didn't have to carry all the weight, because the Alumni Association and many other entities of the university used athletics as a vehicle. We must do the same.

In the end, to bring this all together we must win. Doesn't matter about the other opportunities out there because we can't make them go away. We just hae to quit using them as an excuse. Let's stop spreading incorrect information and if someone is not returning your call, then call me, because I think I have proven I will communicate. Put on a Green shirt. make others do the same and make your way to the games. Bright days are just ahead.

#641946 On Your Conference Change

Posted by Mark Gerdes on 01 May 2012 - 04:34 PM

I normally have little good to say about schools changing conferences. The whole realignment thing has been out of control, stupid, and done for all the wrong reasons.

But out of all the schools changing it is North Texas that I have no bad feelings about. Your choice was done for the right reasons. To bring schools of regional interest into your stadium to increase the enjoyment of your fan base. You've been on an island too long and it will be good to see you part of Texas again.

We all know CUSA chose you for your market and other ignorant reasons. But they accidentally are getting a good conference member. They are lucky though a bunch of their fans probably don't know it.

You will probably catch some bad vibes from some in the Belt, but you leave the Sun Belt better than it was when you entered and have been a great partner over the years.

I will definitely be rooting for you and will be excited to see what happens.

I would ask one thing....don't forget where you came from and all your years with us. You know we are still fighting,

#583417 Apogee Stadium Film

Posted by Boomer23 on 29 August 2011 - 06:31 PM

For nearly two years I have been filming and photographing the new stadium.

I am glad to say that my work is finally done.

I would like to thank KingDL1 for his help with the great Aerials that also went into the film. It really takes it to another level.

#532811 Dissapointed And Embarrassed To Be An Alumni

Posted by bdan2002 on 28 November 2010 - 09:56 AM

Wow. Where shall I start. First, we have no idea of went on behind the scenes of this search. We are calling this a terrible hire; we are disappointed in RV;here UNT goes again; yadda yadda yadda. We were not in the interviews, we don't know who was in the search or who was not in the search. We have a head coach now, who if I think correctly had the number 4 ranked defense in the country (playing in the SEC) and coached in a national championship - wow UNT you chose a terrible HC. Give me a f'ing break. Yes we loved Coach Chico and he did a great job, Fran would have been a great hire, Mike Stoops would have been great. Yes we are offering him about 500k. Great. That shows UNT is making an effort to do something. But of course - people are saying - well, if we can pay him 500k, then we can pay coach Fran 500k. But this is a coach would could not get the job at UNLV. AGAIN, we don't know anything.

I guarantee you - the same people who are bitchin and moanin about this hire and writing RV and all this other bullshit, are going to be the ones that are going to be on the UNT bandwagon when we go to a bowl, or win a conference championship, or have a huge win at home. This reminds of Ron Washington with the Rangers. Everyone hated him and bashed him until he took the Rangers to a World Series. How about we show some faith and confidence in who was chosen as the HC, rather than trash it.

How about we give the new HC a f'ing chance before we pass judgment.

I could give a damn what Texas State does or UTSA or TCU or SMU - I am a UNT Alumni. I care what UNT does.

It makes me sad as a UNT Alumni to read these comments. Who would wanna come here and coach? UNT has not done shit in years in football, but suddenly we think that the next hot head coaching commodity wants to come here and save the world.

All I can do is laugh. I get so tired of coming on here and reading nothing but negative stuff about this hire. UNT is truly starting fresh - a new $78 million stadium, a coach making $500k (when did we ever think that was going to happen at UNT) and a new coaching staff (hopefully keeping coach Chico).

If I pissed some of you off, I am sure you will eventually get over it. We got the best coach, for UNT, at this moment. Welcome Coach Mac!!!!!

#685541 Senior Day

Posted by OlineMom on 12 November 2012 - 11:01 AM

Just had to share this story with the Mean Green Family – it says so much about this team. I am 5th year senior O-lineman #70 Coleman Feeley’s mom. Traveling up from Austin on Saturday for the “Sr. Bowl” against USA we experienced major car trouble in major traffic on 35. Our hearts were breaking realizing that we were going to miss the senior presentation before the game; that our son would be out there without us. To make a long story short, we were able to communicate with Mary Hardin, Football Administrative Assistant Extraordinaire, who does so much for this team. She arranged for the wonderful Jamie Simmonds, O-line Coach Mike Simmonds’ wife, to be with Coleman on the field. As the parent of a college football player, you pray for someone like Jamie to be near your son. Coaches’ wives and families live and breathe Mean Green Football too and their contribution, while mostly unseen, is immeasurable and invaluable. We learned the rest of the story when we finally arrived at the stadium at the end of the first quarter…Not only was Jamie Simmonds there for my son, but the whole O-line came out on the field – my son’s “brothers” were with him. While we always knew the Senior Family portrait would provide a bittersweet memory, we had no idea what a poignant picture it would be. Thank you everyone. Go Mean Green!
(Many thanks to the Fortenberrys for photo – the family portrait with Jamie by Rick Yeats can be seen on the RYJ website)

#575946 Texas Monthly called.......

Posted by FirefightnRick on 02 August 2011 - 10:40 AM

...to ask a few questions about Boomer. The nice gentleman who called is an NT alumn working as a fact checker for Texas Monthly. They are going to include Boomer in the Traditions section of their annual football issue. And this morning after I got home from work I took several new hi-res photos of him to send to their photog department. The Texas Monthly staff down in Austin seem like a bunch of really nice folks. I only wished I had taken the photos in the evening, or had a cloudy day, just to eliminate the shadows.

In answering the questions to Texas Monthly I made sure they knew specifics of Boomer as a Tradition that separates North Texas from any other BCS program in the nation. I especially included how proud I am of the fact that unlike tU's cap gun or A&M's WWI breach loader, Boomer is not only one of the last remaining muzzle loaded black powder cannons used in BCS college athletics today, but more importantly was designed, hand crafted and assembled on our campus by North Texas students, faculty and alumni.

Here below are a couple of photos since the new face lift this summer. In the second photo, everything you see other than the barrel, is brand new. New Barrel Cheeks, new Steel Banding, Locks, Hinges and Pins. All bigger and better than before.

I want to say thank you to those who have given me the honor and pleasure to work on this project once again for the Mean Green. I love working with this material, especially the hand crafted solid red oak. That is why Boomer(unlike most of your authentic and replica 19th century cannon) is natural clear-coated wood grain, rather than painted Olive Drab Green. In 1988 I just couldn't paint over the wood because I was so impressed with it's beauty.

And finally, let me just say that I know the upgrades completed this summer will not be obvious to most who see and HEAR Boomer this fall. But they are there and they make him and his Limber just about as close and accurate to an original M1841 6 pounder as I think he will ever get. I hope you, the students, alumni and faculty of Mean Green Nation like them.

#551586 Played Ball With Tony Mitchell Last Night

Posted by sparkmank on 31 January 2011 - 11:48 AM

As a student here at UNT i like to use my resources, so last night i decided to go play some ball at the Rec (just like i do just about every night). Anyways me and my friend were there and he spotted Tony, after being hesitant I decided what the heck i should ask him to play. I went over and introduced myself and told him how happy I was he picked UNT, he was very nice and told me it was the best fit for him, i went on to ask him when he would play (already knew answer was just making sure) and he told me after 1st semester like all of us already know. For the game, wow! stupid athletic, he might have been going 5% yet was a freak athlete. he put on a show for sure.Between legs,360ed, and a free throw line dunk. It was stupid crazy.

PS: Kederick was there last night and we talked and i asked him what was up and he said our minds have been on the Tourney and we aint taking care of business. He also said he cant wait to prove all the haters wrong and told me a hot streak is coming. Him and Tony seemed to be very close too. They talked for a good hour about coach Jones and just basketball in general. It was a great night for sure... Sorry wish i had little more info but anyways GMG!! :goodjob:

#522017 Amazing Fact About Today's Game...

Posted by CaribbeanGreen on 30 October 2010 - 03:58 PM

Todd Dodge was here for 3 1/2 seasons. In the FIRST GAME after his dismissal, the team posts its most impressive victory - by a large margin - since before he was hired.

I don't have the time or patience, but I truly wonder if that's ever been done before. Not only did the team take all of one bye week to perform far better than it EVER EVEN APPROACHED under Football Trilli, it posted its largest margin of victory since.... wait for it.... 2004.

Two things: First, if there's even been a more painfully obvious case of addition by subtraction, I haven't seen it. Second, and most importantly, this gives us hope. I don't care that it was WKU (who throttled ULL into next Tuesday and has been damn competitive in their whole SBC slate thus far).... THIS WAS OUR BEST PERFORMANCE IN SIX YEARS. This gives us hope that maybe these players CAN play. Maybe, with actual college coaches and an actual sense of urgency, motivation, and a proper and competent game plan, we are in the position to be competitive next season. In this conference, with a proven coach, we shouldn't hope for it - we should expect it.

#641973 The Good and Bad of CUSA

Posted by emmitt01 on 01 May 2012 - 05:20 PM

Joining CUSA will have so many positive results for us as NT fans. First, we'll get local teams in Apogee and the Super Pit consistently. Our alums will finally get to play games against teams that co-workers and friends know and/or graduated from those schools. The "water cooler rivalries" will exist for us...finally. We'll have makeable (and desireable) road trips. And, my favorite part, we'll have an excuse to go to New Orleans to watch a football game at least once every two years (and in some cases twice in a year...once to play Tulane and once as the CUSA representative in the NO Bowl).

But, alas, there will be one horrible result of joining CUSA. One drawback that a great deal of our fanbase will be unable to escape and will cause them heartache year in and year out........

The last "legitimate" excuse for not supporting their alma mater will be gone. For years and years some of our "fans" clung to the "I'd come to games but we play in a crappy stadium" excuse. So we built Apogee. Then they changed their incessant whining to "Apogee is nice, but we don't play anyone I care about." Sorry folks, now we're playing Tulsa, UTEP, Rice, La Tech, Tulane, So Miss, etc. Unless some of you want to stand your ground on the "I love NT, but only when UT, the Rangers, or Cowboys aren't playing" or "The weather isn't ideal for an outdoor wedding so therefore it's bad for football" excuses, I hate to tell you that you'll need to be calling the ticket office soon.

I just hope some of you can survive this drastic shock to your realities.

#613657 Tony Mitchell predictions

Posted by NT1978 on 13 December 2011 - 02:25 PM

Great job, hip-hop. You soccer'd up Tony Mitchell and ruined everything. Not even Karen Aston could save Tony Mitchell Day now.

Twas the night we’d been waiting for all across Mean Green land.
Not a dissension was stirring; the flames of hope had been fanned.
His finals all taken, he’d received the appropriate score.
It was time for Tony Mitchell to hit the hardwood floor.

The Pit Crew was standing; the Alums took a seat,
it was time to see if the Mean Green would truly compete
With Villarreal in his sport coat and Dr. Rawlins across the court,
the crowd was there to see if he was as good as the report

When out from the tunnel came two cheerleaders with banners.
The crowd noise was excessive, like kids with no manners.
The team followed closely with a certain new poise.
The fans were predicting some tournament noise.

Sitting at court side, glare hardened like stones
and dressed in his finest was coach Johnny Jones.
More rapid than eagles his players they came,
and he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name?

There was Jones and Williams and Franklin and Hall,
Hogans and Edwards but that wasn’t all.
The team was well rounded and if Mitchell did fit,
he hoped that this year would finally be it.

The crowd was a twitter with anticipatory glee,
they had come to see the Mean Green, including Tony.
For the end of the story and to come and take stock,
December 18th at the Super Pit, tip off - seven o’clock.

#597294 The unexpected outcome of offering tickets to a friend

Posted by shart965 on 12 October 2011 - 01:44 PM

I hadn't been to a UNT game since the last homecoming and had a chance to take my 2 kids and wife out opening day. We subsequently decided to become season ticket holders and Mean Green Club members given the experience. I have two boys - 9 and 5 and always look at events like this as a way to show them the "College Experience". By the way, the mood at Apogee far exceeded anything I felt at Fouts as both an undergrad and Alum.

Well to get to the point, I wasn't able to attend last weeks game so I offered my tickets to a good friend who has high school age boys. His one son plays on the freshman football team so we thought it would be a great opportunity to show him what college sports can look like. His other boy was considering possibly not going to college at all. After the game, I spoke to my friend to hear how it went. All he could say was how excited the boys were to be there. The parties going on and the excitement around the stadium. He said it provided a glimpse of what college life was and afterwards both boys had a newfound desire to go to college. Whether it happens is another story, but my friends wife was so happy we offered them the tickets because all the talk in the world about the benefits of college couldn't outweigh the actual feeling of being there. Sometimes seeing the diversity of our school can open the eyes of those with preconceived ideas of what a college student looks like.

The best way to fill the stadium is to invite someone out. My friend is now thinking of going to homecoming with his family just to watch the game even though he didn't attend the school.

I think that's pretty cool.

#572973 My time as a lonely UNT fan at the Texas Monthly Shoot

Posted by jtm0097 on 16 July 2011 - 07:53 PM

Hey guys I am sure that you all saw the recent posts for fans that were needed for the Texas Monthly college football fan photo shoot. Well I ended up going and doing the photo shoot and being a representative of UNT down in Austin. It was a great gig, and they put me up in the Omni hotel for 2 nights down here in Austin. Texas Monthly couldn't find any other UNT fans so I got my girl friend who is a UNT alumni as well to participate. Well we got to the
shoot today, and it seemed like there was a stereotypical fan from each FBS school in Texas. Here were a few stereotypes I noticed about a few of the schools fans. The TCU and SMU fans that arrived were very typical. They came dressed in with their shirts tucked in, hair combed over, and wearing their sperrys. The Tech fans were the first ones to start drinking, and had a flag that said Tech drinking team. The A&m fans had some of their male fictional military cheerleaders there. The Texas fans were nice and had good things to say about our university. The Rice, U of H and UTEP fans all were very nice as well. We all talked about football and how our schools are moving in the right direction. I showed pictures of our new palace, and they agreed it was awesome. I had a lot of fun down here and tried to promote our University as best as I could. I can't get to any more specifics about what was done with the shoot but look out for the September edition of Texas Monthly, Go Mean Green!

#662093 UNT Rec Update through Sparkmank's eyes

Posted by sparkmank on 29 August 2012 - 12:54 PM

Point guards: CJ is solid on all levels.. He can do it all plain and simple.. PJ is a facilitator .. Unreal ball handler with average shot, a better version of TNo..

Shooting guards- Alzee- shut down defender has been shooting lights out .. TJ- salty lefty that is crafty and can score from perimeter Brandon- Have not seen much of him at REC lately.. Overlander - knock down shooter with a lot better defensive skills than many will think..

SF - Jwill - most improved, dunking constantly and shooting leaps and bounds above what he was at this point last yr - Holmen- very rarely see him there but his beard is sexy (no homo) JP - great rebounder, long and athletic

PF - Niko - just being Niko - roger - working his tail off, treats every possession like its his last - Tony- no words describe the talent, his shot looks quicker and more pure.. Defensive wise there is no one close, his ball handling has improved and his passing has been beautiful

C - Keith Co - great surprise! Physical and can get up, blocks shots and rebounds, can't shoot but loves to run the floor and loves to dunk! He will be solid!

PS- play of the yr occurred yesterday when tony received a mid court pass from PJ and ally oop windmilled on a poor soul.. So dirty , play stopped for 10 plus minutes..

PPS- Ike diogu was there yesterday with a coach who is helping out named coach Allen (they played together at ASU) keith and tony played very well against him and didn't back down at all.. That's against a guy who poured in 20+ against team USA for Nigeria.. All together team looks great! Great chemistry and all of them rave about Benford and how close they are getting to him.. Well that's all .. Gmg

#639406 I gota a strange feeling....

Posted by ParksAndRecRick on 23 April 2012 - 06:36 PM

I loved the hire of Coach Dan. I didn't know much about him, but it took 5 minutes at his official Press Conference....and then I kneww we had someone special!

I also loved Johnnie Jones. He pulled this program up to a great level, and I am proud he got the job that he coveted. He will be great!

And, I also want thank all you loyal gomeangreen.com gang who keeps us up to date with tweets, blogs, rumors and the such. Every night I check in with great anticipation of breaking news, new recruits, and exciting updates. Seriously, thanks so much!

Did you ever believe a basketball coach would leave Wake Forest for UNT?

It appears we are closing in on a Men's Coach who will keep the train rolling!

A new Conference affliation looks bright!

Our other sports are having incredible years....from Women's Tennis to Golf!

We have bitched at each other for years: including me! We were taking pot shots at other GoMeanGreen members, because we have an uncanny love for our University...and wanted the BEST! We have lots of desire. We know our University's potential is limitless! All the years of frustration and lack of facilities and lack of money are finally behind us!

NOW: It's time for the Mean Green Nation!

I'm proud to stand with each of you....'cause UNT is not the sleepy ole campus North of Dallas anymore!

Thanks RV and the Staff for one GRAND job! For the students, Alums, fans and Administration thanks for believing "our time would time".

I got a funny feeling...our time is about to be NOW!!!

God Bless the Mean Green Nation!!!!
